John the Ripper is free and Open Source software, distributed primarily in source code form. John the Ripper is also a fast password cracker, currently available for many flavors of Unix, Windows, DOS, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak Unix passwords. It supports several crypt(3) password hash types commonly found on Unix systems, as well as Windows LM hashes.
The latest release of John the Ripper fixes the “generic MD5” self-test bug with “-sse2” and “-mmx” builds (introduced in -jumbo-10). MSCash and MSCash2 OpenMP parallelization has also been enhanced to adjust the number of key slots according to the number of threads.
