Hello, today I am going to talk to you about another important subject for your business. Of course, you may have seen dozens of videos or read dozens of articles about the mindset of the » great » entrepreneurs who succeed, from Elon Musk to Bill Gates, but that is not what I am going to talk to you about.
I am going to talk about my own experience and that of dozens of entrepreneurs I have known, whether self-employed, freelancers or company owners, and about the importance of mindset to the success of your business.
Your mindset, your state of mind, is an essential ingredient of success: much of your success depends on it. But it is not a magic recipe: you have to really commit to it. Unfortunately, many of you reading this will not put it into practice: and that is precisely what has to change.
This subject could fill a whole book, so I will try to be as concise as possible about the mindset you need to adopt to ensure the success of your project, with some simple advice.
1) Ambition. When I talk about ambition, I do not mean wanting to rule the world: if you chose to work for yourself, once again, your goals (and therefore your ambitions) are not necessarily financial. But you must never let that engine stall.
To do that, think of every day as day one for you and your business: its future lies ahead, just like yours. To stay ambitious, it is important for every milestone you reach to be an opportunity to set new goals: they can put your previous goals into perspective and give you new challenges.
They might involve sales, technical matters, finances, cutting your working hours, optimisation: it does not matter. What matters is to keep doing better every day.
2) Execution. Ideas are fine, but on their own they have little value: the only thing that really matters is execution. But what does execution actually mean? Simply keeping the distance between an idea and action as short as possible.
In practice, that means eliminating everything that adds friction between the birth of your idea, designing it and deploying / implementing it. Act quickly, even if that means making more mistakes: experimenting quickly lets you keep what works going and eliminate what does not.
3) Avoid impostor syndrome. Nobody knows everything about everything, even in their own area of expertise: consulting documentation, in any form (video, text, etc.), to get a job done does not mean you are not up to it.
I charge more than 400 euros excluding tax per hour, and I still regularly consult documentation. What matters is that the work is ultimately done to the highest possible standard for the service agreed… of course.
4) Be a » self lover « . Work, even work you love, can sometimes be exhausting, and a bad mood can quickly eat into your productivity or your health. Make time for things that keep you in a good mood: relaxing, exhibitions, films, books, concerts, walks, sport, etc.
5) Never take a client's remarks personally. I know, sometimes it is difficult and you can take offence. But you have to learn to accept feedback, even when it throws you off balance.
You will make mistakes. Sometimes you may get poor results. But these must never hold back your progress. Stay professional, discuss the points your client is unhappy with and keep your focus on the solution: » OK, I have taken that on board. Here are the solutions I suggest « , and everything will work out for the best.
6) Know how to » kill » a project. Tried an idea and it does not work? It is time to kill it, and without regret! No nostalgia, no monument to its glory: move on to the next: remember execution!
