Linux: understanding load average - Christophe Casalegno

Duration: 10:10

English version of this page. The original recording is unchanged.

In this video, I tried to demystify the concept of "load average" on a GNU/Linux operating system.

It is a term you have probably heard many times, often with explanations or conclusions that sometimes seem grounded in beliefs more esoteric than technical.

Exceptionally, I had a little free time this Sunday, so unlike my usual approach, I made a small effort to do some editing.

For the code I refer to: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/torvalds/linux/v5.3/kernel/sched/loadavg.c (replace the kernel version number with the version you want). In the end: no, I did not check, but it is entirely possible that this algorithm has evolved over time :)
