Six new NVMe SSDs have just been added to a node in my Proxmox cluster. The VMs have been moved to the other nodes, so I can work in peace, and I take you along to create this new RAID 10.
I check the disks, start building the RAID array, then increase its synchronisation speed. I can do that here because the server is not running any VMs. On a busy production machine, using all resources for this operation can cause problems: that is precisely why the default limit exists.
After a break somewhat prolonged by a nap and a Fortnite cup with my son, I resume the configuration: updating the initramfs, mounting storage and checking after reboot. I check both datastores, the cluster quorum, the network and filters. Then all that remains is to move the VMs back to their original locations.
