"Silence gives consent"… It has become fairly rare for me to speak on these subjects, but after reading this text, I certainly could not give my consent by staying silent. To sum up my thinking: the remarks of Aurélien Barrau, who is sinking further and further into sectarian and anti-science extremism, are dangerous and toxic for the whole human species. There, I said it. I will let you read his remarks in the screenshot below before I explain this blunt assessment.
Aurélien Barrau presents us here with an extremely pessimistic, one-dimensional, even apocalyptic vision of the use of energy and of technological progress.
First of all, the idea that any technological improvement or any more efficient source of energy would automatically be a curse is an absurdity.
This boundless stupidity seeks to deny all the benefits that technological progress has brought, notably in terms of health, education, and quality of life in general.
Moreover, claiming that the challenges we face are not engineering problems shows either ignorance or blatant bad faith.
Engineers are on the front line alongside scientists in tackling these complex challenges, whether it is climate change, pollution, or the preservation of resources and living things!
It is easy to "philosophize" in this way by painting everything black, but this approach is not only simplistic, but also dangerously misleading.
This call to rethink ontology (philosophy that studies being, existence and reality) and axiology (the study of moral and aesthetic values) is in the end no more useful than homeopathy (alternative "medicine" based on the belief that the more a substance is diluted, the more potentially powerful it is…): at most an intellectual indulgence that offers no concrete solution to the urgent problems our planet faces.
Poetry and philosophy certainly have their place, and I appreciate them a great deal, but they will never replace concrete action and tangible solutions.
Finally, describing technological advances as weapons for eradicating beauty and magic is dramatic (unfounded) hyperbole rooted solely in sectarian and dogmatic rhetoric.
This limited vision of the world is completely unrealistic and ignores (deliberately or not, it does not matter) the many ways in which technology helps preserve and enhance what Aurélien Barrau claims it destroys.
Over the years, the eminent scientist he perhaps once was seems to be sinking deeper every day into a dire lack of nuance and understanding of the real world’s complexity (not enough vitamin B12 supplementation?)
In the end, Aurélien Barrau is no longer anything but a bad commentator on a world that is beyond him, having become incapable of contributing in a constructive way to developing viable solutions. Unfortunately, because of his fame, his remarks remain extremely dangerous!
I will see you soon. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and keep well!
