Every time you make a technology choice, you help write part of the future. Not just yours, but humanity's. Free or proprietary software, SaaS or on-premises, centralised or decentralised infrastructure: choosing also means indirectly casting a vote to shape tomorrow's technology.
In this video, I talk about what goes beyond technical comparisons: vision. I discuss the particular freedom of choice entrepreneurs have and my own decisions, including using free software and choosing GNU/Linux over BSD because the GPL licence better represented the values I wanted to promote.
Meeting the client's needs must remain the priority. But defending your convictions is still possible: when a project heads in a direction I do not want to promote or use, I prefer recommending other providers to selling an unsuitable solution. There is no universally right answer. But all our choices, on their own scale, help shape tomorrow's world. I have made mine. What about you?
