I have known mazes since the maps I drew for Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back. But finding your way around as a player and knowing how to build one are two different stories. So I set myself a challenge just for fun: write a maze game in Bash, a language that was not really designed for it.
I start with movement and collisions. To generate the maze, I go through failed attempts, a detour through an online generator, then a depth-first search algorithm that I eventually get working directly in Bash. The result is a game that no longer depends on an external site, with victory conditions and several difficulty levels.
I show you the trial and error as much as the result. Ideas for turning it into a dungeon exploration game remain just ideas: items, encounters, extra passages... There would be plenty more to play with in this project.
